Nole’s fingers trembled over the console. General Beck’s words echoed: “Chief Engineer. It’s yours.”

He hesitated. The meteor’s trajectory was…wrong.

Nole had never been one to question authority, but lately…

He looked again at the data. The size, the velocity — something didn’t add up. Nole turned toward his superior. “Sir? It’s not going to hit us.”

Beck’s face tightened. “Launch the EVAC ships, Nolan.”

Nole’s head spun. Millions of scared, hopeful people waiting aboard the spaceships. His stomach twisted, realization dawning. This wasn’t a play to save humanity. This was a culling.

His hand darted toward the ignition, but it was too late. He caught a glimpse of Beck’s pistol before it struck him over the head. Then…black.

Across the globe, spaceships roared and blasted into space. One-way tickets to prospective planets.

The General looked up at the orange, apocalyptic sky. He watched as the meteor grew larger then sailed by Earth, a still thriving planet with a hell of a lot less people.
